Sena Tues
Biography
A Ghanaian-born artist and 2014 graduate of Ghanatta College of Art and Design, Alexander Kwabena Sena Bampoe, known as Sena Tues, is a contemporary figurative painter exploring identity. The core of his work to date has been abstract realism expressionism with a focus on portraiture. “Academic painting techniques are the foundation for what I do, but I’ve enjoyed jumping off from that, experimenting with both paint application and infusing the work with elements of collages and other materials.” He was born and raised in some of Accra’s toughest neighborhoods and this upbringing influenced and drives his passion as an artist in the representation of life through facial expressions. He depicts both traditional and modern urban life through the bodies and eyes of black identities. “I believe that’s where our emotions are best portrayed. I also believe it better helps to visualize one’s experience and feelings; it’s an exchange of information with or without narratives.”
The use of flowers in his work represents self-awakening and self-love in the black community. Black represents the people, the community. Red is for blood which is life-giving. “Yes, that’s what it means; I give life to my paintings.”
